Farmer John’s has some of Montana’s best genetics when it comes to chickens. Most of the farm’s chicks are purchased from Canyon Creek Poultry which is located in the Bitterroot. Local breeders Angela and Rebecca Krebs have raised some of the best poultry in Montana. The Krebs are so particular about the quality of their Heritage chicks that purchasing from the Krebs is far better than hatching them on the farm. Rebecca Krebs has also been very successful in working with superior genetics and has designed several breeds of chickens that are best suited to /Montana’s ever-changing weather.
There are about 50 of these special hens on the farm which are raised and handled in a healthy, humane way. Along with living the good life, they lay some of the best brown eggs in the county. The chickens free range and pasture graze on about 1 acre of lush grass full of a variety of bugs. They are also given access to organic supplements from Heritage Organics and grains that are non-GMO from Blackfoot Feed. We also add to their buffet by giving them protein rich spent barley from Draught Works Brewery.
Their eggs are wholesome, natural, and fresh. They are Non-GMO, antibiotic, hormone and herbicide free. The yoke is rich in color and contains protein, vitamin B2, B5 B6, B12, Selenium, vitamin E, Vitamin D3 as well as other minerals and nutrients.
The sustainability of the hens comes into play when they are fed kitchen scraps, different grasses and bugs. When the hens get too old they become stewing hens. The Farm is also pleased to contribute to the sustainability of Draught Works Brewery by taking the protein rich spent grain and feeding it to the chickens.
